SendSafely files are automatically deleted 5 days after their expiration date or manually deleted by clicking the X next to the file or package in the SendSafely portal. Business and Enterprise customers have the option to disable either or both automatic and manual deletion options.
- When manual deletion is disabled the "Delete" option is disabled within the SendSafely user interface.
- When automatic deletion is disabled, files still expire on schedule to prevent recipient access, however remain in storage and can re-activated in the future. If access to an expired package is required in the future, the expiration date can be adjusted by the package owner or admin in order to re-activate the item.
You can chose from the following Disable File Deletion options:
-
Option 1: Disable both automatic and manual deletion
- No files are deleted, and remain in SendSafely indefinitely
-
Option 2: Manual deletion allowed, but automatic deletion disabled
- Users are able to manually delete files, but expired files are not deleted and remain in expired state indefinitely
- Security groups can be used to gate manual deletion to a subset of privileged users only
-
Option 3: Automatic deletion allowed, but manual deletion disabled
- Users are unable to manually delete files, but files still automatically expire and delete on schedule
You must be using your own AWS S3 bucket to disable file deletion.
SendSafely recommends setting up a Portal Master Key in conjunction with disabling file deletion so historic packages can always be decrypted by a subset of admins at any point in the future. Without a Portal Master Key, admins can only extend the life of the package to reactivate it, but not decrypt the package contents.
Security Groups
Security Groups can be used to gate the ability to manually delete items to a subset of privileged users (such as admins) or service accounts that require it for automated processes.
Workspaces
When manual file deletion is disabled, files and folders can still be deleted from a workspace by end users, however, they are NOT deleted from the S3 Bucket and can be recovered.
To disable file deletion, please submit a request to the SendSafely Help Desk. For security and identity verification purposes, the request must be made by your organization’s SendSafely Administrator and submitted as a SendSafely secure message from the administrator’s SendSafely account.
