Overview
The Restict sending to freemail domains setting stops users in your organization from adding recipients to transfers or Workspaces with freemail or disposable email domains, such as Gmail, Yahoo, or Mailinator. When the setting is on, SendSafely checks each recipient's domain and rejects addresses on known freemail or disposable domains.
Your organization's own email domains are always allowed.
Availability
Availability: Restrict sending to freemail domains is available on the Enterprise plan.
To enable this feature for your organization, reach out to Support@sendsafely.com.
How It Works
When a user adds a recipient to a SendSafely package, SendSafely checks the recipient's email domain:
- If the domain matches your organization's enterprise or organization domain, the recipient is always allowed.
- Otherwise, SendSafely checks the domain against a continually updated and maintained list of freemail and disposable email providers. Recipients on those domains are not added.
Where the restriction applies
The check runs on the SendSafely platform, so it applies everywhere a user can add a recipient:
- Transfer Packages: the Send page, the package Status page, and Slack
- Workspace collaborators
- Enterprise and personal contact groups
- Integrations, including Outlook, Gmail, Salesforce, Zendesk, and Freshdesk
- The SendSafely API and SDKs
Where it does not apply
The restriction covers outbound sharing only. It does not block people on freemail domains from uploading files to your users through:
- Dropzones (verified and unverified)
- Personal URL packages
- Replies
Adding several recipients at once
- Bulk add (comma-separated list): allowed recipients are added and blocked recipients are rejected. An error message lists the blocked addresses.
- Contact groups: if any member of a contact group is using a blocked domain, the whole group is not added. Users also cannot add a blocked address to a contact group.
What Users See When a Recipient Is Blocked
Users see the following error message: "Your organization has restricted the ability to send to freemail domains. The following users could not be added:" followed by the blocked addresses"
Exempting specific users
To let certain users keep sending to freemail or disposable domains, use a Security Group:
- Contact support@sendsafely.com to request a Security Group with the Can send to freemail domains permission.
- In the Enterprise Console, add the users who need the exemption to that group.
Members of the group are not subject to the restriction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which domains are blocked? SendSafely uses a continually maintained list of known freemail and disposable email providers, such as Gmail, Yahoo, and Mailinator. You cannot add or remove domains from this list.
Can I allow a specific freemail address, such as a contractor's Gmail account? No. To let a user send to freemail domains, add that user to an exempt Security Group.
Will this block people on freemail domains from sending files to us? No. Dropzones, Personal URL packages, and replies are not affected.
Can I block domains that are not freemail, such as a competitor's domain? Not with this setting. It only blocks freemail and disposable email domains.
